The Millennium Development Goals

An invitation to live the Gospel

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me [...] Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."   Matthew 25:35-36, 40b

How the Diocese of Maryland Supports the MDGs

2010 Grants

The 2010 grants will go to eight different projects. We were excited to receive so many applications and regret that we are unable to fully fund all of them.

Two projects are in Haiti. St. John's Glyndon asked for support for their youth-to-youth reforestation project. The Diocese will give them $1900 to purchase seedlings for planting at St. Etienne's.

St. Martins-in-the-Field has been working in Haiti for many years. They are helping construct a school. The first floor has been built. The Diocese will grant them $3000 to complete the second story.

We continue to pray for the people of Haiti as they recover from the damage caused by the earthquake.

The Church of the Transfiguration in Braddock Heights completed the water project. This year they asked for scholarship money to educate young people in this area of southern Uganda. The Diocese will give $3100 for one year's tuition and housing for 6 students. They will learn a variety of trades, including sewing and truck driving/maintenance. To learn more about this ministry in Nyakishenyi, contact Judy Wilson at Transfiguration.

St. Andrew's Pasadena has been purchasing solar cookers for a refugee camp in Northern Uganda through Jewish World Watch. $30.00 provides a woman in the camp two cookers, one for food and the other for water, pots, and training in how to use the cookers. The Diocese is delighted to add $2880 to this cause.

St. John's Mt. Washington brought us the work of the Ochan Self-Help Alliance.

tree and seed distribution in Opac Village

The Diocese will give $500 to the women of Opac Village to plant sunflowers and tree seedlings. This project will also be the 2010 Diocesan Lenten Project, "Sunflowers for Opac".

St. John's Ellicott City continues to work in Kenya. The Diocese will give $2500 for their work with the Wamunyu Special Needs School.

Christ Church in Columbia brought the Christian Care foundation for Children with Disablitlies in Thailand's work to the committee. We will support their education and rehabitation care and support with a grant of $3870 in 2010. This grant will fund one teacher for a year.

Ghanian Mothers' Hope is stocking the clinic in Akramaman, Ghana, built last year next to the preschool and playground. This year we will give them a $5000 grant for medical supplies.

2009 Grants

The 2009 grants will go to seven different projects.  We were excited to receive so many applications and regret that we are unable to fully fund all of them.

The Church of the Transfiguration in Braddock Heights sponsors a water project in Uganda. Global Mission recommended the diocese fully fund this project in the rquested amount of $2200. To learn more about this ministry in Nyakishenyi, contact Judy Wilson at Transfiguration.

St. Margaret's in Annapolis has been working the The Global Aids Interfaith Alliance (GAIA).  We are delighted to support their work in health education in Malawi with $2500.  This fully funds their request. 80,000 people die every year from Aids and related illnesses in Malawi every year leaving over 500,000 children alone and orphaned.

$4000 will be given to the Itipini Community Project, Umtata, South Africa.  We continue to applaud St. Peter's Ellicott Mills for their work with the African Medical Mission and only regret that we were unable to fully fund this important work.

Christ Church in Columbia brought the Christian Care foundation for Children with Disablitlies in Thailand's work to the committee.  We will support their education and rehabitation care and support with a grant of $3870 in 2009.  This grant will fund one teacher for a year.

St. James' Monkon continues to work with El Hogar in Honduras.  The orphanage is now taking in girls as well as boys.  The Diocese gladly gives $4800 to assist in housing the girls in the neighborhood while the orphange buildings are expanded to house them.  This project is fully funded.

Ghanian Mothers' Hope is building a clinic in Akramaman, Ghana, next to the preschool and playground.  We were able to support the building in the amount of $4000, only part of what was requested.

Our seventh project was brought to the committee by St. Albans Glen Burnie and Holy Trinity in Baltimore County.  Together they have been working building Buen Pastor, a school in the Dominican Republic.  The diocese is delighted to support this construction with a grant of $4056 in 2009 and only regret we could not give more.

We urge every person and congregation in the diocese to support these seven projects, both by remembering them in prayer and with financial contributions.  Money can be sent to the diocese, marked Globabl Mission on the memo line, or directly to any of the sponsoring churches.

2008 Grants

In 2008 the Diocese awarded a grant of $2500 to El Hogar in Honduras for a water project for the orphanage.  This grant will be matched by St. James, Monkton.

Another grant of $5000 goes to Mbaikini School in Kenya for school renovations and a water tank.  The request for funding came from St. John's Day School in Ellicott City.

The project is part of the outreach program of St. John's Church and Kenya Connect, a Maryland based program connecting school children in the United States with children in Kenya.

We encourage other Episcopal schools and Sunday School programs to participate in this program as pen pals or as sponsors of scholarships.  The Rev. Rosemary Beales at St. John's can tell you more.

St. Peter's, Ellicott Mills, brought to the Committee the Itipini Community Project, Umtata, South Africa.  This project is part of the African Medical Mission based in Henderson, NC.  St. Peter's has been assisting this community of approximately 3,000 people for many years.  Diocesan funds of $14,000 will help supply the community with nutrition for infants, mothers and children and pharmacy supplies.  Contact St. Peter's to learn how you can help the people of Itipini.

The final 2008 project again funds the Medical Mission to Nuevo Arenosa, Panama.  The Frederick Region Council of the Diocese also supports this project.  Diocesan funds of $6600 will be used for pharmacy supplies and home health kits.

Any remaining funds will be given, as was done in 2007, to Episcopal Relief and Development for mosquito nets.

2007 Grants

The Diocese awarded its first grants in 2007.  $7800 went to Ghanaian Mothers' Hope for meals for the children at the preschool, teacher salaries, and a poly tank to hold water. An additional grant of $6642, from the unspent Panamanian Medical Mission money, was awarded to Ghanaian Mothers' Hope to fund, in 2008, meals for 100 preschoolers and salaries for four teachers, a cook and a kitchen helper.

$12000, adjusted to $6503.60, went to the Panama Medical Mission to supply the people of Nuevo Arenosa with pharmacy supplies and approximate 250 home health kits. This project was also supported by the Frederick Regional Council.

$2500 was given to the Marcala Honduras Chlorination Project for water decontamination kits.  The project was also funded by St. James Monkton.

The balance of the Diocesan 0.7% was given to Episcopal Relief and Development for mosquito nets.

Applications for Global Mission Grants are accepted through the end of July and the Grants are awarded in December.  The application form is available here.

The Diocesan Christian Formation program, during Lent, sponsors Christian education and outreach programs linking Lenten practice with education about the MDGs.

The 2009 Lenten Project was Nets for Life in cooperation with Episcopal Relief and Development.  Nets for Life provides insecticide dipped nets to protect sleeping families from malaria.  We collected over $10,000 enough for to send nearly 1000 nets to Africa.

In 2007, the children collected over $11,000 through Pennies for the Playground for a playground

and water pump at the Ghanaian Mothers' Hope preschool in Akramaman, Ghana.

In 2008 we collected for Bread for Itipini, a project to supply the children of Itipini with their afterschool snack of bread for at least a year.
